With women labor participation at 20%, the men would need to be at 60% to come to the ILO graph of 40% for India (assuming that women make 50% of the workforce and that's a stretch)

Sonali, Thanks for writing this. When do we talk about employment in this sense? As citizen's right. May be because, we have yet to become one in a real sense. We just get to read the headlines of pay packages during placement week, couple of times in a year. That's employment for us. The top 20 percent.

The evil of caste plays its role in each and every strand of our social and economic life. So effective. And it would not go quietly into the sunset. I havent read many essays where caste is factored.

Have always wondered if all the unemployed will make pakoras, who would eat it? The same people who are making it? It's understood that the employed would rather order it on Zomatoe. Once their small capital punji is over, what happens to the idea of wealth creation? :)

Thank you. Looking for more.

Objectivity of essay is lost in diatribe against Indian communists. There is absolutely nothing wrong in asking for better working conditions, however, any employment is better than not having one.

//Note the accelerating fall in labour participation under Modi and earn to fry pakoras in real earnest.//

Actually the fall which was precipitous after 2005 , has decelerated in its pace after 2013 , and it is only 2020 which has seen a dramatic fall , most probably because of the pandemic.

Good analysis from a different perspective. Is it possible to get the detailed data per state? Instead of analyzing everywhere, we can compare few of our good performing states against bad the ones as a starting point. Have few questions though. Why are we not able to generate job opportunities? Bad governance? Even the world employment % is reducing. Do Our MSMEs strong enough to grow or does it need a push from govt or need new policies? Our society is closely attached to caste. Does caste play major role in people not wanting to work in certain unskilled employment? Or Is it because of low participation of woman in work force which is not helping or it’s myth that lesser number of woman are in Work force? Does the skill of a person determines his or her ability to get a job or place where they live determines? I wish you will do more analysis on these and write another essay.
