It's not that the more sensible of the Congress leaders are unaware of what the challenges are and you have articulated it brilliantly. But they have failed to influence required changes thorough internal party mechanisms. I don't see how the Congress becomes relevant again as a national alternative with the Gandhi scions at the helm. A few victories here and there due to BJP weakness don't count. It's a complete lack of courage in the party leadership that is so depressing to see. For those of us who are looking for a secular and progressive alternative (and this doesn't mean being complete peaceniks vis-a-vis our belligerent neighbors), the wait has been too long and there is no sign the drought will end anytime soon. The Congress is willingly ceding space to others.

Sometimes one can capture the silhouette of an oak in an acorn. 2. After CM Mamata Banerjee’s magnificent May victory, RG did not call to congratulate her. Put out a tweet after a couple of days. Had teamed up with the Left earlier to hobble her as she faced the challenge of her life. Both parties, that had ruled Bengal earlier for decades, getting clean bowled. On 23rd January 2019, had stayed away from her Calcutta rally, a nascent gathering for Opposition unity. 3. Unsurprisingly, the tigress from the Sundarbans is now giving it back in spades. Cannibalising leaders and potentially voters in Goa, Tripura, Meghalaya. In Uttar Pradesh, which will determine 2024, recall the Congress association with Shri Akhilesh Yadav in 2017 and what it will contribute in 2022. 4. Unclear how many regional parties will accept either the leadership or the centrality of the Congress for a potential UPA III style arrangement.

It is brain storming article who have become blind to the injustice done to the other faction in the quest of petty interests. Depleting Congress due to clueless leadership and perfidious attitude spoiling the opportunity. They do not understand that they are spoiling the future of country. Before winning elections and assuming power, they are required to provide solid strong opposition to restrict damaging activities to our reputation outside. Paradoxically Congress was known for taking collective decisions and corroborative administration.... strange!

Valid questions. Need urgent brain storming on:

What is Congress offering in its place? What is Congress’ target market? Is it the same as that of BJP, or different? Overlapping or segregated? What is its caste, class, or social structure? How can it be differentiated from that of BJP? What is Congress selling to this target market? Past performance? Social justice? Political and economic equality? Economic and political freedom? Which economic class or social strata does the Congress identify with? Does anybody have a clear idea of what Congress stands for? Why does it oppose BJP’s agenda? How is BJP’s agenda harmful? Apart from criticizing Modi, what does the Congress offer?

The article is spot on need to identify target voters and a enthusing narrative. Maybe you will like to write a follow up article on how to overcome the complete control of MSM by Modi and consequent blackout of Congress events and messaging.

Too many words in article to cloak what actually ails congress and helps BJP - it’s a combination of:

1. Leader of disputable origin with suspect loyalty (still, pushing a dynast down throat of everyone)

2. Appeasement politics - social media has amplified a range of stupid decisions taken over several years by congress (newspaper/tV no longer can sustain a particular narrative)

Harping on Hindu politics without juxtaposing appeasement politics can only mean that author has a deep seated JNY style bias.

Particularly agree with the bit where you say that they should forget about the BJP’s target audience and concentrate on the rest of us—60 % is a lot!

Well said and truly commendable analysis. Congress is like corporate job.. join and take perks till you retire. Targets under the weak leadership is like pleasing your boss or minorities or who did not vote the elected government with media attention under them you can do scams and the congress leadership problem they can’t oust them if they do so party will be remained with noone. Now comes to BJP/Modi government they want him to be opposing party so they can invest less time on opposition.

Wait for the miracle when want the change they do it with no reason vote doo… 65% votes are stamp paid votes rest or wanted.

Rahul Gandhi didn't start to speak for the minorities till he smelled and sensed that Muslims have started to strengthen around Owaisi. Missing Bihar opened his eyes and of many more. Power have to be created in order to be listened and cared by others. Congress have to defend the minorities more in coming days, not to loose the quartile's major portion more.

Great analysis but Congress is a spent force. Third alternative has to emerge. Hopefully Congress will slowly wither away precisely because of the reasons cited in this blog.

This is not an essay but an intellectual feast gor Congress to delve and debate. There is not a single para that does not disrupt well seated intellectual beliefs. Assimilate a diversity of opinion, keeping everyone involved and one same page, exploit weakness of RSS should be mantra for congress.

It is deep, effortlessly iconoclastic, factually rigorous.

Your dissection and solution is excellent, perfect diagnosis with past history but with due respect, I am sure, Congress is least interested to regain power as they lost the power with due diligence.had they interested in retaining the power, these two ultracrepedarians would have been in Jail.the entire ''Raita'' belongs to Congress as they wanted these policies to be implemented but could't as Gandhiji was dragging him back. they needed the ''Fall guys'' they nurtured and brought them in on centre stage.in case, BJP appears to lose power, it will declare internal emergency by having a friendly war with Pak/China, both needed very badly to be amplified by Noida's Gang, soldiers are expendable for Ruling Elites, Congress will be an active partner in this adventure.May be, I am wrong but my hunch is normally not wrong.from twitter,I am banned for a week.Appreciated.
