Every action have an unintended consequence, good or bad. AEBs are worse for democracy compared to economy. Protectionism policy by our own oligarchs may look better in the short term but it will kill their businesses in the long run. Either they have some other plan or they don’t care.

So whats the WTO's stand on our turf protection. Wasn't it under the agreement with UPA that we loosened/ dismantled the licence raj and brought down the tariffs. Is now a defunct body or are they happy to see us drown in our own quagmire. , being in chinese orbit. That brings us to the noticeable contradiction and that is turf protection under AEB has resulted in further increasing our import dependency and reduction of tariffs, whereas it should have pumped up the domestic manufacturing. Oh.. pls also unblock my twitter handle @surjeetsachdev, don't remember why you blocked me :)

There are also non tariff trade barriers like compulsory registration order for importing most things which drowns most small businessmen. Imagine asking someone who imports a small quantity of goods for trading to get BIS certification costing a couple of lacs to get locally certified first for each model and variant. It is both time and money and many lost opportunities.

Also, in EU, the manufacturer gets the certification. Manufacturers do it only if the certificate is valid for a large market. In our case, traders are being made to get the certification as manufacturers only certify limited stuff that they think they can sell, not everything and not everyone. We don’t buy a lot of things in quantity and most of our QC is based on Pre-published BSI standards, that is why,. We just insist that STQC issues one more. We should accept FCC AND CE unless we have a better norm.

EU allows for self certification subject to scrutiny and doesn’t stop commerce till these certifications are in place unless there is fraud. There are also locally made alternates available for most things whereas we do not make quite a lot of of stuff. If I need to import 2 cameras and 1 tyre set (not made in india) for resale.. I need to jump hoops, get paperwork and pay labs and stqc disproportionate fees before I can get anything.

I am all for ensuring quality and compliance to norms , but a lot of small trading businesses have disappeared and will disappear.
